Join the Central Arizona Butterfly Association (CAzBA) VIRTUALLY (via ZOOM) Saturday, Jan 22nd, from 2 pm to 4 pm for a presentation by Ken Osborne. For the past 25 years Osborne has conducted butterfly ecological/biological research, undertaken comprehensive arthropod inventories and diversity studies, and implemented species reintroduction, habitat restoration, mitigation, and conservation plans for a wide range of threatened, endangered and sensitive butterfly species. Today's presentation is titled: "Biology of the endangered Quino Checkerspot and its purported response to climate change in California". The checkerspot butterflies (Euphydryas, pictured) are a charismatic group with many species across the northern temperate latitudes both old world and new. One species is the iconic Edith’s Checkerspot (E. editha) with many geographic subspecies over western North America. This presentation will focus on the biology, ecology, and complex population dynamics of southern California’s Quino Checkerspot (E. editha quino) as the backdrop for a saga of historic decline, endangered status, and conservation. With these concepts in hand, Ken will make a critical examination of two landmark studies of climate-change induced species range shifts for 1) a purported northward latitudinal shift for the species as a whole, and 2) a purported elevational range shift for populations in southern California.
