Moth Night at Boyce Thompson Arboretum with Margarethe Brummermann

location:

Saturday, August 24, 2013
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Join CAzBA and members of Boyce Thompson Arboretum for Moth Night with Biologist Margarethe Brummermann. There will be some live music in the visitor center breezeway (6:00-7:00), followed by presentations on insect identification and one with some dramatic close-ups of insects (about 7:00-8:00), and then after dark we'll head out into the gardens to see -- and photograph -- moths, lace-wings, arthropods and more. Close-up photographer Paul Landau and scorpion enthusiast Dave Oberpriller will be there to offer their advice and tips on nocturnal camera settings. This year we are fortunate to have insect expert Margarethe Brummermann as our special guest. After a short presentation on insect identification, she will set up white sheets illuminated by mercury-vapor lights that will attract all kinds of insects. We'll have plenty opportunity to photograph and observe them up-close, with Margarethe to help us ID them. Judging by our prior event, and the Arboretum's popular Scorpion Night outings this summer -- you can expect an event that will be great fun for families, kids, entomologists and photographers - just about everyone who enjoys a little adventure outdoors and after dark. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring a flashlight or headlamp. BTA is normally closed at this hour, but will re-open the gates at 5:30pm.
